Initiative, that is. As part of the school’s
inaugural year, alumni, students and friends are pledging to
complete 5,000 hours of community service. It starts with
inspired action in your local community, and yields a global
impact. We need YOU to help! If each public policy alum
completes at least ONE

Volunteer The Duke Reader Project offers students the opportunity to get feedback on a class writing project from alumni who have relevant professional experience. We invite participation from all Duke alumni, but are particularly seeking volunteers with judicial, legislative or policy experience related to national security to work with students in David Schanzer's fall course on counterterrorism law and policy. President Obama appointed Daniel Werfel (MPP’97) Controller of the OMB’s Office of Federal Financial Management on July 30. Read the White House news release.
Outside the Classroom, the company founded and led by Brandon Busteed (PPS’99), won a Stevie Award for Best Corporate Social Responsibility Program for a program to prevent high-risk drinking among students.
A recent proposal in the health care reform debate moved Glenn Hackbarth (MAPPS’77, JD’77) into the spotlight in this article inThe New York Times because of his role as the head of the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission.
Two Sanford alumni were appointed as observer members of the Duke Board of Trustees in June: Hardy Vieux (PPS’93) of Alexandria, Va., is president-elect of the Duke Alumni Association. He is an attorney with Blank Rome LLP in Washington, D.C. Sunny Kantha (PPS’09) was executive vice president of Duke Student Government as an undergraduate and is an investment banker at Morgan Stanley in New York.

Professor of Public Policy Bruce Jentleson was sworn in as Senior Advisor to the U.S. State Department Policy Planning Director in July.
Don Taylor, assistant professor of public policy, teaches a class on comparative health care systems and has joined the national health reform debate, both on his blog and in his 10-part series of op-eds in the Raleigh News and Observer.
