Politics that matter for Generation X

Brent McGoldrick (PPS '97) and fellow Duke alum Russ Freyman (Trinity '96) are concerned that politicians and young potential voters are ignoring each other. Candidates don't understand the issues that are important to Generation X, and young adults are tuning out political messages and failing to turn out to vote.

To end what they call "a cycle of mutual neglect," McGoldrick and Freyman decided to document the scope of the problem, in the hope that attention would encourage change. After learning about surveys in his public policy classes and an internship, McGoldrick decided they could conduct their own public-opinion poll. They have been reporting their findings through Neglection 2000, a project they co-founded through an on-line nonprofit geared to young people called Third Millennium. You can read more about the project, including McGoldrick's and Freyman's campaign diaries, press releases and McGoldrick's appearance on CNN's Inside Politics, at http://www.neglection2000.org/neglection_new.html
