Living Public Service Reception in Washington, D.C.

On July 22, 2009, students, alumni, and friends of the Sanford School gathered to celebrate the tradition of public service at a reception on Capitol Hill in the Cannon Caucus Room. Gene ContiGene Conti (MPP ’78) is North Carolina Secretary of Transportation. He has previously served as Chief Deputy Secretary of the N.C. Department of Transportation, Assistant Secretary for Transportation Policy at the U.S. Department of Transportation, and Secretary of the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.

Will DavisWill Davis (T’84, MPP’87) heads the United Nations Office in Washington, DC where he serves as the UN’s liaison with the Administration, the Congress, and civil society. Previously, he worked for the U.S. Department of State, the White House National Security Council, and the OECD, headquartered in Paris, France.

Ashley Files FloryAshley Files (MPP ’83) is Acting Executive Secretary at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, where she has worked since 1988. From 1995 to 2005, she was Director and Acting Director of the Division of Health Benefits and Income Support in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Management and Budget. She began her federal service as a Presidential Management Intern in the Office of Management and Budget.

Yvette FontenotYvette Fontenot (PPS ’94) is a professional staff member with the Senate Finance Committee, working on health care reform. She was also on the staff of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and a policy analyst for Medicare and Medicaid payment at the Office of Management and Budget. She was Vice President of Jennings Policy Strategies, a policy consulting firm.

Ichiro TodaIchiro Toda (MIDP’ 98) is Development Effectiveness Officer in the Structured and Corporate Finance Department of the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB). Prior to joining the IADB in 2005, he worked at Japan Bank for International Cooperation, a bilateral financing institution of the Japanese government.
